Role profile

King’s College London is seeking to appoint an exceptional leader to the role of Director of King’s Foundations. We are looking for a Director who combines strong leadership and organisational skills, with a clear commitment to excellence in education. The role-holder will be innovative and forward-thinking around how education is evolving and have a clear understanding of the university pathway sector, including its challenges and opportunities. Together with supporting the Executive Director, fellow directors and relevant senior colleagues to bring the King’s School of Professional & Continuing Education vision to life, the role holder will oversee the continued development and delivery of high-quality pathway programmes delivered by King’s Foundations. The role-holder will bring commercial awareness, sound financial knowledge and demonstrable operational leadership to the role.
The Director will provide overall educational leadership and display a substantial track record in teaching and professional achievement within the EAP and pathway field. You will be an excellent communicator, capable of leading and inspiring staff and students to drive forward the Department’s and Function’s ambitions and strategic aims across its full range of activities. The person appointed will also play a full part in the senior management team of the newly formed cross-university function, King’s School of Professional & Continuing Education. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director, fellow Directors and other appropriate managers to represent the interests of the Function and ensure strategic goals are met.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide educational, strategic, financial and operational leadership for the department to ensure the effective development, support and delivery of the strategic vision of the College.

  • Work effectively as a leader across the Function to realise educational opportunities and potential efficiencies, balancing department, function and university priorities. 

  • Promote King’s Foundations and disseminate the activities of the Department and Function, both within and outside of King’s.

  • Promote and foster excellence in teaching and learning, including the broader student experience, student success and student attainment. 
 
  • Support the development of innovative practice in teaching and learning in a way that is consistent with the values of the Function and which furthers educational development and innovation at King’s.   
 
  • Ensure all department programmes meet the needs of King’s, working with Faculties to ensure progressing students are fully equipped for success.
 
  • Provide clear leadership on areas which impact on pathway student recruitment, including changing trends and shifts in areas such as visas.   
 
  • Responsible for the effective implementation of an inclusive people plan which covers recruitment, progression, development, equality and diversity. 
 
  • Take a commercially focused outlook to programme portfolio, manage the department’s finances, ensuring income targets and KPIs are met; developing opportunities to grow revenue which contributes to a wider definition of education at King’s. 
 
  • Lead on the business planning round for the department, ensuring it aligns and enhances the Function’s overall strategy and priority areas of development. 
 
  • Actively shape, implement and manage educational administration within the department. 
 
  • Represent the Department and Function at relevant College fora and decision-making bodies
 
  • Ensure that appropriate mechanisms are in place to ensure and monitor compliance with statutory, university and Function duties, regulations and policies. 
 
  • Build effective and accountable relationships with relevant senior colleagues to deliver the vision. 
 
  • Line-manage the senior management team and implement effective departmental management structures to ensure effective management and development of staff in the department. 
 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislative requirements and College regulations, policies and strategies.
