Introduction

The issue of children and young people’s mental health is one of the most significant health and societal issues today. One in every nine children between the ages of 5–15 has a mental disorder – representing the only area of mental health in which we are seeing a significant increase in incidence and prevalence.

Immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 36% of children and adolescents with a mental health disorder had received support from a mental health specialist in the past year. The pandemic has had a detrimental effect on mental health, with 8.1% reporting that their mental health had worsened substantially in April 2020 compared with pre-lockdown February 2020.
